The Railway Coastal Museum, located in the original 1903 Riverhead Train Station, tells the fascinating story of how these services changed Newfoundland. Come meet our CN pensioner Volunteers, who worked on the Trains and Coastal services, and see why this Museum recieved the Manning Award (2004) and has been designated a National Historic Site.

Elmira, Prince Edward Island

The trains will soon once again be rolling down the tracks in Elmira. The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Solicitor General of Canada; Andy Mooney, MLA for Souris-Elmira; and Garry MacDonald, President of the Friends of Elmira today announced details of a miniature railway that will be operating at the Elmira Railway Museum site next summer.

The miniature railway will consist of two, 11 passenger gas- powered trains that will travel on a one-mile track. A tunnel and a maintenance building for storage will also be constructed. A model train display donated to the Friends of Elmira will also be assembled and displayed.

'This new development is a unique attraction for eastern Prince Edward Island and one that fits ideally at the Elmira site. It will not only be another reason for visitors to come to the area, but it will also allow people to experience train travel that was so much a part of our history,' said Minister MacAulay on behalf of the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and the Honourable Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada (HRDC).

Post-Contact Beothuk History: Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage

Post-Contact Beothuk History: Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage: "These furriers were skilled in living in the woods and they very much resented the Beothuks taking their traps which the Beothuks reworked into lance blades. Many of the attacks against the Beothuks in the last half of the 18th century were carried out by these people."

Post-Contact Beothuk History: Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage: "There he found that they had erected a dozen poles upon which they had hung furs and shells, obviously expecting that Guy would leave behind what he thought was appropriate. This appears to have been a classic example of silent barter, and may have been the most common form of trade between the Beothuks and Europeans in the previous century."

Beothuk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Beothuk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "By 1829, with the death of Shanawdithit, they were officially declared extinct though oral histories assert that a few Beothuk survived around the region of the Exploits River, Twillingate and Labrador for some years and mixed with 'whites', Inuit and Mi'kmaq.[9] Some families from Twillingate claim partial descent from Beothuks.

Relations with the Mi'kmaq, a native group who arrived in Newfoundland during the colonial period, and with the Labrador Inuit, were hostile but did not often descend into violence. Relations with the Inuit were marked by avoidance more than anything else.

In 1910, a 75-year old Native woman named Santu, said to have been the daughter of a Mi'kmaq mother and a Beothuk father, sang a song in the Beothuk language for the American anthropologist Frank Speck while she was on her way to Nova Scotia and down to New England."
